Can I paint slate? And if so, what is the process?

Years ago we installed this slate around the fireplace and as the entry floor in our living room. Since then our decor has changed and now it doesn't really go with the room. I would love to paint the slate around the fireplace and, if there is a way to make it hold up, the floor as well. I will mention that I have three dogs and two kids and this floor is a major thoroughfare in our house. Also I am positive that both areas were thoroughly sealed when they were installed. Any thoughts and experience you can share would be greatly appreciated.
I also had same situation and decided to just go ahead and paint the slate around fireplace. Painted it an off white using a semi gloss paint. It turned out beautifully and this was over a year ago. I did a test paint on one piece of slate _ put it out in yard and it is still holding. Painted grout same color

Rust-oleum paint that's made for all surfaces may work, but Im not sure
