I have hideous ceramic tile backsplash in my kitchen so I'd like to know if I can just paint it instead of tearing it out.

Yes you can paint the tiles with proper preparation. Degreasing is your first step. I recommend using a natural product and not TSP which is extremely toxic. Next if the tiles are glossy you need to use a good primer to eliminate sanding the tiles. Once the primer is dry you can proceed to paint.

i painted mine and it lasted - I was able to clean it with no problem. I used a primer then painted.

Yep! Clean, rinse well, allow to dry well! PRIME with a smooth surface primer like Zinser 1-2-3. Paint with a great gloss paint, or overcoat a clear gloss sealant to give the tile a shine.

Rustleum makes a product especially for painting tile. My backsplash was rusty colored tile (we got a good deal!), and I painted it white, then stenciled a grass pattern. I sealed it with a few coats of a heavy duty clear product to keep it clean. Everyone comments on how great it looks.
