Has anyone ever painted hardwood floors?

If so, what kind of paint did you use? We recently ripped up carpet with hardwood floor under it. Too many bad spots to redo original floor and there are some large pieces of wood replacements. (Fireplace had been there). I don't want carpet again, can't afford new hardwood or laminate. I thought about painting. Suggestions?

I painted mine 30 years ago when we didn't have money for new carpeting. I regret doing it because the house is one hundred years old and it had a nice wood floor. It's carpeted now but it would be really hard going back to the original wood without a major mess. I remember I finished the paint job with a clear coat finish but the dining room chairs scratched up anyway.

In my opinion I would invest in refinishing the floor verses painting the floor. In the long term aspect it will be worth the investment.

You still have to sand the floor so it accepts the paint. You would be half way to refinished floors with the sanding, so just refinish them. Paint, even with a sealer, won't last. You can live with that until you can afford better.

If I were to paint a hardwood floor, I would choose a marine paint. If the patched areas really stick out, you could always paint them differently to make them look like throw rugs...it would kinda hide the fact that they have been replaced. I have never painted wood floors, but the wood stairs to my basement were painted about 20 years ago and need it again, so that's what I'll use.

I agree with the above comments about refurbishing the floor, as you have the money. I would only do one room at a time. I lived through refurbishing an old plantation main house that hadn't been lived in for 20+ years, so this really is a good subject for me. We used a medium gloss clear sealant that made the floors look great! Especially when the sun hits it. Let me know if you need more details.

All made me decide to hold off on painting. Thanks everyone!
