What is the table made of?
First sand it lightly to remove any shiny or coated surface. Then use a liquid sander (to be absolutely sure!). You can then either paint with the finish coat or use a primer as a base coat and then a paint topcoat.
Just rough it up first, paint with primer, and let it dry at least 24 hours between coats.
