Take a cabinet door to your local home improvement store and ask for their advice. They have the newest materials, ideas, and application products to do a professional job.

Donna: you may want to do a chalk paint (and distressing) technique... but wax will eventually wear off in a busy kitchen. I have finished some of my chalk furniture with polyurethane... for a more durable finish.
You'll want to make sure you seal them after you paint the cabinets. A lot of people will use a wax. I personally use a clear polyrcrylic. It comes in a gloss, satin, and matte finish and doesn't change the color. It protects the paint and allows you to wipe them down.
