I would not paint, but you can dye them, they are fabric. Automotive stores have stuff for vehicles that might work, but probably more expensive.
First you need to find out if your carpet is dye-able. It is a process try this website....https://www.wikihow.com/Dye-Carpet. It should be able to help you.
I would dye it with Rit Dye, if synthetic use the new DyeMore. I would apply with a spray bottle like this lady did her chair.... http://www.naptimediy.com/2014/02/dyewingbackchair/
be sure to use really hot water as directed
I would use the fixative too.
Be sure to mask off all areas with plastic, remove furniture and drapes. Wear gloves and old clothes.
They have a color mixing chart too... https://www.ritdye.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/ColorRit_FINAL.pdf
Yes, thanks so much everyone.
Get a hand sprayer with a bottle attachment pour a bottle of red wine into the bottle and,do light spraying evenly .
You can spray several coats until you get the desired color let it set in for several days then use a carpet cleaner to suck up the residue
