The first step is to clean, clean, clean your countertop. Most people recommend using vinegar and water because it leaves no residue, but others also recommend TSP to get all of the dirt and grease off of every spot. You'll need to decide what you want the counter to look like when you're done. You'll need to give it 1 or 2 coats of a good primer, then your pattern or just paint a color. Usually faux granite and faux marble are popular. For those, first put down either black or white latex paint, then sponge on several colors of paint (you can use craft paint) When you're satisfied with the look, let all of the paint dry then use 3-4 coats of a sealer. This is the basic method. There are also kits available that will give you everything you need. I know Giana has one and I'm sure there are other brands.

When I started looking, I read a lot of articles and watched a lot of video's. Then I practiced on a small table to be sure I could get the look I wanted. Here's the youtube.com page for painting countertops. You can start your search here:

Pick a paint kit made specifically for countertops. Follow the directions meticulously.

You should also consider simply replacing the countertop. If it's not a large or unusual counter those cultured marble bathroom sinks may not cost any more than the paint kit. Easier and more long lasting to replace rather than paint.
