The cabinets are teak?
Hi Patricia. Usually teak wood is kept oiled to keep a shiny patina. This would not allow the paint to stick. If the cabinets are really old and weathered you might get paint to adhere. Otherwise I would go to your local hardware or home improvement store and look for teak oil. They should have a few colors to chose from. Teak oil is like a stain so you will not have a solid color. It will be transparent showing the wood grain.
thanks amanda , it is a shiny surface, guess i would have to sand it back to bare wood !
