Looking for advice for painting a fireplace mantle

Old fireplace mantle with oil base high gloss paint on it. Want to use chalk paint. Will it adhere? Do I have to remove old paint?

Since its oil-based, you would need to sand and apply Zinseer B-I-N primer before painting.
No need to remove it will adhere, just make sure to seal it well when you are done with a urethane.
if the old paint is sticking good u can prime it first
If you're painting a brick fireplace, you want to make sure it's really clean and clear of dust before you get started. Definitely do a coat (or two) of primer before you start painting.
