I just redid a brass headboard this past summer. I just bought primer (spray) for metal, primed real good. Then spray painted. I used rustoleum hammer spray paint. It turned out very nice

A lot of paints don't require sanding. I recommend that you speak to a paint pro at your local home improvement store. He will be able to tell you which paints to use for this project.

There’s a product called Liquid Sander, you just wipe it on and it conditions the old surface so the new paint sticks. You have to paint within 30 minutes of applying the product. It’s been around for a long time.
