My living room walls are painted firebrick red & I want to know if a base coat of another paint is needed before going to a gray color.

Yes you will have to prime before as the red will bleed through unless you want to try the paint from Behr The Marquee collection is the newest line and has a paint and primer in one.

Prime with KILZ or BIN. For the red you may need two coats. I have tried the paint and primer paints and don't like them. They brag one coat coverage but its not true with all colors. I prefer priming then painting.

Prime first with the product that Wiiluam suggested. The Behr paints are good but I doubt they will be sufficient to properly cover red

Use Kilz primer and have it tinted gray - either darker or slightly lighter than the gray paint you will be using.....if you have heavy texture on your walls, at least 2 coats of primer will be necessary. 2 coats of primer is definitely recommended to make sure the red won't bleed through.

To further add to my comment you can try the paint yourself as samples are available. Should it work for you that eliminates extra steps. Every ones home is different and what may work for some maybe will not work for others.

Make sure to use a tinted primer....if you have the color you want MOST paint places can tint the primer to match the paint. I did not do this and it took over 5 costs of paint!!!!!!!

Use "KILZ" or some other good primer. Add some dark gray tint and that will make it much easier to cover the red. If you do not do this, you will end up putting on three or four coats and it will still look "splotchy". Ask any good painter or paint store like Sherwin-Williams...these guys are professionals.
