Just moved into a 1987 cape and the dark oak kitchen cabinets will be painted white. They smell musty; should we paint the inside, too?

Wash the cabinets out with white vinegar and allow to dry,if the odor still remans, you may have to put a sealer on them

i would clean them really well to ensure that I've eliminated the source of the musty smell....if no more smell, I wouldn't paint the inside

After airing them out completely, I would paint them. The combination of the airing out and the new paint should eliminate the musty smell. Just make sure the insides are totally dry before closing the cabinet doors and filling them up.

Clean them first with vinegar/hot water/salt. That will take out most odors. Then paint. Might as well start fresh, rather than cover up old.

I didn't paint the insides of mine, but I did put pretty contact paper on the shelves. Painting the cabinets is hard enough, lol.

Clean with vinegar and water, add an open box of baking soda to absorb odors, then use a primer such as Kilz first and then paint.
