You can make a homemade cleaning mixture with hot water, lots of baking soda and dish soap. And then, you can attach a scrubbing brush to a drill for a power clean done by yourself - you'll be shocked at what a difference it makes! Here is a tutorial/video for attaching the scrubbing brush to a drill for cleaning purposes: https://www.hometalk.com/diy/clean/bathroom/how-to-clean-using-power-tools-18933955?expand_all_questions
How to Clean Your House Using Power Tools
I'm not sure yet on the surround as I am going through the same process, and yes mine are the 70's golden/yellow. I've found they have a tub paint out that you can get in different colors, but it is a process for about 1/2 the cost I think they said. About 3-5 days curing time too, between coats depending on conditions of drying times. I was thinking of doing this with a tile or backsplash type stuff, but still looking into ideas.

Using a drill will ruin the finish on the fiberglass. I would call a fiberglass shop and ask. Better to know before you start or make it worse
www.addicted2decorating.com this lady refinished her tub and from the pictures it turned out looking great. Don't remember what type material the tub was made of but believe it was fiberglass. Just remember to ventilate well.
Funny you should ask, that is my next home project! Seriously. I live in an older mobile home with a fiberglass tub/shower unit which has yellowed over the years. I am using Rustoleum tub and tile paint in white. Several homeowners here have done the same thing with excellent results and have held up well. Caution: Wear proper breathing masks and ventilate the room as best you can. ALWAYS follow manufacturer's guidelines. Best of luck.
