There has to be a way without spending more than a new washer would cost to get it fixed

look on the internet for a solution. you will need the washer number but id and saved myself the cost of a repairman. good luck
I googled it, because my front loader manual has a set of buttons to push and hold to clear things. Mine is not a Fridgidare so I don't know the specifics. One site suggested the old un plug and plug back in, like a computer.
If you still have the manual, the answer may be there (probably under troubleshooting).

Try entering your query at "appliancerepair.com", specifying the serial number of your washer.
Believe it or not, through the years I have had great success by calling the company directly and speaking to their costumer service.
