How badly is the drywall damaged? If a big chunk of it is missing, you might have to cut that section of drywall out and replace it. Your local hardware store should carry squares of drywall (the ones in our store are about 18" square) for jobs such as this. Get those, some drywall clips, joint compound and joint tape.

--Cut the damaged section out of the wall,

--Cut a piece of exactly the same size from the square you bought at the store

    --Iinstall the clips,

--Cover cut edges with joint tape (I forget its proper name)

--Apply joint compound and spread with a putty knife or paint scraper til smooth

    --Let dry

    --Sand and paint as needed

If I could do it, anyone can!

Prime with Zinzer primer, feather edges. Skim coat with drywall mud, let dry, sand & reprime.

Thank you, Nicki and Cheryl. No big chunks missing. The wallpaper we removed had curled up at the seams but was still aggressively stuck to the walls. Using liquid wallpaper remover did soften it up but also softened the paper liner on the drywall, so it has a lot of shallow gouges (a lot!). Thank you for the info on how to repair it. I'm not so handy at stuff like this.
