My ceiling is separating from my wall leaving a very small space.

    That is an odd problem. If this is drywall the repair is relatively easy but probably won't last. I think that you need to have a professional take a look to determine why the structure of your house is moving.

    Have your home inspected to make sure it’s just cosmetic and not structural damage. Then tape, spackle and paint. The tape helps to keep the gap from returning

    You could have some unexpected settling going on. Have someone check your foundation before you repair your walls.

    The ceiling must be nailed down or tyed down to the wall the wood is rottening and needs to change if metal screws are loose

    My old house does that in the winter also. It's a sign of the house settling. Mine goes back together in the spring.
