How do I re-do the grout in the stove alcove?

Hi there. I need to replace the grout in my stove alcove as it backs directly into the fireplace in the lounge room wall. The grouts cracked and is allowing smoke to filter through.. we’ve cleaned the chimney and as far as we can tell there’s no issue other than the cracked grout. You can see in one of the photos where’s I’ve had it taped up and the grout is cracked. Please help! Thank you and happy DIY days to you all 😊✌🏼
With the information you have given me, I am surprised that this looks like a piece of sheet metal. Better check the regulations with a qualified chimney specialist. It could be a sandwiched insulated panel that might pass inspection. This looks like a problem that should not be a DIY. It could mean losing your home and maybe your life. Please don't put it off. If you can't get an immediate inspection, call your firechief and I'm certain, you'll get the help you need.
I agree with Tedward. This is not a DIY. This looks like an improper install and a hazard. It's a dangerous situation that needs to be fully corrected. Should not be a panel of anything. Needs to be fireproof. Should be fireproof cement or fire resistant caulk. You need a pro to evaluate it.
I agree with William! I used TSP to clean. Kilz primer, and alkyd paint like Benjamin Moore Advance. I applied with a foam roller to minimize drips and brush marks.
If smoke is coming thru ANYWHERE but going up the chimney that is a serious hazard. Please do not use until you get this fixed. One small crack can start a fire.
The photos and description are vague. It's not the fire danger that I am talking about. You have smoke coming through the cracked grout which means a heat source is close by. Fire rated caulk is fireproof but is used to seal anywhere a heat source is close by and prevent smoke infiltration. You best solution would be to use fire rated caulk where the grout is cracked. Just to be safe.
