How do I use a headboard to create a fireplace surround?

Has anyone ever used a head board to create a fireplace surround.?
Wow Beth, your project sounds so interesting. I love the idea. I've been seeing a lot of makeovers where people combine dark wood stain with white paint. Mostly on tables and the contrast looks amazing. Whatever you decide to do I would love to see the end result. It's going to be one of a kind

why cannot the columns be stained ? But, paint is another option; 'real' wood and paint go well together --- the photos in the the attached won't necessarily show a mantle/columns but the principle is the same ..

personally, I think the 'surround ( columns, etc) would look fine painted and the flat surface of the mantle itself stained with decorative items on it -- candles, photos, etc.
and yes, I'd use the 1/2 round columns for the foot ... painted the same as the headboard
