Several neighbors have used this edging. They nailed it around the top of the stump, filled with dirt and planted shallow rooted flowers or pretty ground cover (which will be contained).
Or fill with mulch or pretty stones and put interesting pots with seasonal flowers or dwarf evergreens for year-round interest.
Or drill holes in the top of the stumps to fit pots in so they don’t easily blow over.

I use a guy to do stump grinding. He charges around $100 for a large stump but it is money well spent. I understand why he charges so much - his equipment cost $17,000! You can not plant another tree directly over where he grinds but you can plant grass, shrubs, flowers. A tree can go beside where a stump is ground down. He goes below the ground level by the way.
How tall are the stumps? what type of tree? consider filling in the area around with soil.
Put large potted plants on them.

This is the way I kill tree stumps using epsom salts. It takes awhile to work, but stops the tree roots from trying to throw up new leaves. Good luck!
