Cover the outside with fabric, spray paint, or Contact paper. Then, use some leftover cardboard to make an "X" divider inside to hold flatware, paint brushes, kitchen utensils, etc.

You can wrap it in felt, wrap a ribbon around it and use it as a pedestal to set a plant on. (I did this to elevate a plant in grouping.) You could use it to increase the height of just about any item in almost any location.

You can glue cloth in it and store socks, you can paint it pink, add felt ears and a bottle cap nose, cut a slit in it and make it a bank.

Clean it out good, wash it, dry it quickly, either on the gas stove or inside. Put baked cookies in it, and wrap it as a take home gift. Wrap it in Christmas wrap, and put a present in it, they will have no idea what's in it.
