there is frosting "contact" paper for glass that should help you. It is more like a cling or decal and you can have some really nice patters. Check Amazon and other on-line sellers for some ideas.
Sure can! Some other Hometalkers have done it.

Personally I like the idea of interior shutters. That way you can open and close them.

Hi Keatingblanche,
If sunshine is the issue, I'd suggest looking at Lowes, Home Depot, or another similar store - even Amazon.com for special film that will block the sun's rays but let in the light. The one we have is clear, however you might be able to find a frosted one. These special films come in many designs and probably Amazon will have the largest selection. Unless Contact brand has a special line, these films are better because they are easy to remove, if necessary and also easy to clean. We've had ours up for years so they do last well. Wishing you the best.
I have used this on my garage windows. But be aware that after a number rof years it cooks onto the surface and cannot be removed easily.
You can but it will be hard to remove and leave a sticky mess. A better solution is the non-adhesive privacy window film. Amazon has a zillion designs to pick from. Its applied with water, a bit of dishsoap and a rubber squeegee to get out the bubbles. I have several window I put this on and its been on for 15 years.... https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=non-adhesive+privacy+window+film&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Anon-adhesive+privacy+window+film
Research window tint on-line. There are 100's of various types that you put on with water (and they actually stick). I used some for a window above my front door and it's been in place for several years now. Many designs and various levels of transparency.
