How can I improve this dresser and make it more modern?

Hi Angie, your dresser has some lovely details. How to give it a facelift really depends on your style and what you love. If you love farmhouse style, it would be lovely painted white. If it were me I would paint the dresser a bright color and add some fun knobs, or paint and decoupage the existing knobs. If you don't want to paint the dresser at all, sometimes just changing the knobs to something that pops against the wood can make a big difference.

Painting the dresser in a color that she loves will give it a whole new life. It always amazes me the difference that paint can make. You could add new hardware, or spray paint the existing hardware and reuse it. Depending on the finish of the dresser you might have to sand and prime first. Although a lot of paint brands now have paint/primer combos that are excellent.

If you love green then go for it. Trends are fun to read about, but we should always do what we love in our homes rather than follow fickle trends. It doesn't matter what the style of your kitchen is, if you do what you truly love it will be awesome.

This is really a personal choice as there are many products out there. I've always used Benjamin Moore Stays Clear water-based polyurethane for sealing acrylic and latex paint because it's easy to use and it doesn't yellow. I've used it on painted floors, furniture, painted tile and many other projects. I did use it once on a chalk painted dresser years ago and it worked just fine. Before deciding what product to use you should check it out first to make sure it's right for your particular project.

It's hard to tell from the pic how rough it actually is, but trying to smooth it out by sanding would probably be a messy nightmare. I would probably cover it with some sort of paneling. If the surface is too rough for that to work or you don't want paneling, Quikrete might be the way to go.
