Identify this rocker?

Jackie Gfeller
by Jackie Gfeller
This has been in our family for at least 90 years, so I know it isn't a modern reproduction. It has a cane seat. I have more photos if needed, these are just two of the whole chair, front and back. Would like to know more about it before I decide what to do with it. I appreciate the vast pool of knowledge that our members have and are willing to share! Thanks!

The shape of the back indicates that it is a Windsor-style rocker. I can't tell from the photo, but the wood is probably either maple or oak. Oak has a coarse, defined, narrow grain. Maple's grain pattern is softer, less defined and is wider-grained. Can't tell about the seat if it's woven in place or is secured with a method called "spline in." If you turn it upside down and look at the bottom and see a pattern of small holes about 1/4-inch apart around the opening of the seat, then it's woven in place. My guess is that if it is over 90 years old, it is most likely woven in place. Another indicator of its age is if you look at the rockers and see, about a third of the way along the bottom, a bit of a flattening, that means it has rocked a LOT! It's a lovely chair and I hope you cherish it.

That was what I was thinking but just wasn't sure what dating for it. I checked out the site, and will study it a bit more. Thanks!

Looks like a piece of Colonial revival furniture, from the early 1900's. Colonial Williamsburg restoration began in the 1920's and there is lots of good sturdy colonial reproduction furniture from that period.

I had one like this. To help you research go to Ebay or Istdibs and you will be very surprised . The thicker seat on this rocker dates it as an older survivor. I believe it could have been produced late 1800,s and no later than 1920's. My Mother rocked all 4 of us in this , like, rocker. Yes, Windsor, mine was maple , never painted. I would just clean , wax and love it. My Mother was born 1919 . She was given this old rocker, in the 1930's.

I have done some comparisons, but haven't been able to find one with the cane seat. But I think your date assessment might be right on. I know it was being used in the 1920's to rock babies. I haven't heard of Istdibs... That is helpful! Thanks a ton!

Everyone was pretty much in agreement with the age of the piece, so I am taking that and running with it! Thanks everyone!
