Hey Folks, A friend of mine recently gave me a butterfly house and a bat box!

I mounted them both opposite each other on a tall pole. Does anyone think like me that the Butterflies will sleep/rest at night and the bats will be napping during the day so they won't be in conflict with each other?

  • The smell of the bats may repel the butterflies, did you think of the smell aspect?

JL, I think you have a solid theory, and I would be very curious about Yamini's theory. Some plants odors seem innocuous or even unpleasant to us, and are attractive to butterflies and other insects, and vice versa. I wouldn't assume butterflies are turned off by the smell of bat guano, which can be intense.

JL, found an interesting website today - http://www.batcon.org/ Bat Conservation International. They have lots of tips about setting up bat boxes. Their temperature needs to be controlled, and apparently there is nothing you can effectively do to attract bats. They just have to find your little bat box and move in. It could be years before your get bats, which will give the butterflies plenty of stink-free tenancy in the butterfly house. Also, a group of six bats in your bat house could eat up to 10,000 insects a night. Holy bats, Batman.

Thanks for that! I have seen several bats at dusk, I call out to them "Vacancy!" but no takers yet! Maybe the "Bat Signal" will drive them in!!! Glad you're in my network, Best to you!,JL

Is your bat house in the sun all day? From what I understand they like their den warm.

All day long but no takers as of yet...maybe they're sneakin' in at dawn...I'll look for little bitty beer bottles and dirty little bat suits laying around and let you know if there's signs of squatters!:-) Nobody rides for free! JL
