I have searched high and low to find 2 identical "vintage looking" window shutters that match in color.

I found and bought the 2 mismatched ones seen in the pic, which I absolutely love!! So question: is it better to paint them or stain them the same color? One is brown, the other a green shade and I think I want both of them to be brown. I do want to keep the old wooden look and texture and not cover up the wood grain and bumps, etc but I dont know really where to start or the about process of staining wood. Suggestions?!? Tips?!? (SN: these will serve as wall decor in my foyer)

You could sand both down to wood then stain and varnish for a normal look, or give them a unique or period look. For the unique approach, go to a kitchen showroom and select a finish to duplicate. There are numerous really cool finishes that would go well. Once you see what you like, sneek a picture and run it by Hometalk again for input on application. One of my favorite types of finish is a wash; it's like a heavy colored stain with wood showing through. The green shutter has an interesting finish. Best, Charles

So they're only mismatched in color? Peace has it down pat, see what you like and He'll tell you how to make them look alike! Best to you both! JL

  • What about both. Stain the outside frame and paint the scrolling?

That's a good point. And if you don't want to paint the scrolling, brush off the scaly surface rust with a sanding sponge then apply a coat of satin or flat polyurethane to give it a clean look. CP

I would sand or strip it down to bare wood. Then go to your local home improvment store, they have great selections on wood stains. You can actually use the color chart with samples on actual wood to get a good look. Its great way to start fresh you know what you used and you wont have the trouble trying to match the stain that was previously applied
