What sealer should I use for a vintage slat basket?

Janet Pizaro on Sep 10, 2015No i have not used a matte spray. I believe minx has a clear protective sealer meant for outdoors and Im not positive but I don't think it would change the color. Minx has a website perhaps reach out to them.Helpful Reply

Jennifer Houben on Sep 10, 2015Really any acrylic sealer will do. Most sealers will do the job nicely, just makes sure it is going to seal for outside temperatures and or whatever mother natures has in store. Krylon has some great stuff, just pay attention to what temperature you are doing it in. Give each layer time to dry if you do more then one.Helpful Reply

Z on Sep 10, 2015Oh, I see why you want to protect but not change it at all @Bab. That's an awesome basket. Any clear finish will darken wood to some extent. It's just the nature of the product. It's kind of like getting it wet. Any exterior grade clear finish would do. Personally I choose Minwax Helsman Spar Urethane water based in Satin. Always make sure to stir (don't shake) it well and so so throughout any project as it has a fine sand that gives it the satin finish. if you don't stir well it will settle to the bottom and you'll have a glossier finish. This product has UV, sun, and rain protection too. http://www.minwax.com/wood-products/clear-protective-finishes/interior-exterior/minwax-water-based-helmsman-spar-urethaneHelpful Reply

Lindy on Sep 11, 2015I've used Krylon Matte on many projects, both wood and painted, to great success. I found out the hard way that a "bargain brand" is not the way to go when it comes to spray finishes. I ruined a project once -dried to yellow color (not clear as stated). If you are in doubt, spray the bottom first to see if you like it.Helpful Reply

LD on Sep 11, 2015You should use an outdoor spar varnish, and here is a link explaining how this is better for sealing exterior wood. http://www.thewoodwhisperer.com/articles/difference-between-spar-varnish-and-regular-varnish/Helpful Reply
