Painting upholstery on furniture

I want to paint two arm chairs. They are upholstered in a burgundy print that is very outdated. Is this possible and if so, what paint should I use? Also, does the paint chip after?

I painted an upholstered chair seat a couple of months ago and haven't had any problems with the paint yet. I used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and soft clear wax to seal it. The chair I used was an old worn chair that was good for experimenting on. It had a heavily textured fabric and the end result had the feel of a soft oil cloth. The results may vary depending on the type of fabric you have. My suggestion would be to find a pillow with a similar fabric and practice on that first before making a big commitment on the chairs. There are a couple ways you can do this. Chalk paint is one way. You can also use latex paint mixed with fabric medium, which you can find on the craft paint aisles of the craft stores like Michael's and Joann's. Before you start, you might want to read through some, or all, of the many posts here on Home Talk about painting upholstery. Some of the comments are also very helpful too. Some of the results are absolutely stunning! http://www.hometalk.com/search/posts?filter=paint%20upholstery Regardless of whether chalk paint or the latex/fabric medium method is used, every tutorial and post I have ever read on this subject says the paint doesn't chip or rub off and the fabric ends up feeling a little bit like leather. I actually have wanted to try this for a long time (and I even bought the fabric medium) but I'm just not sure I like the idea of the leathery results for my particular project so I have been dragging my feet.

I did this with a side chair. I used a rustoleum paint specifically for fabric available in car stores (my store was Auto Zone). It worked beautifully.

chalk paint should work very well. Just do your homework on it. I've seen beautiful sofas and a chaise lounge painted for wedding photos.

You can buy fabric paint and it come lots of colours. I'm sure you can find a colour that you like.
