Its based off a story book. Basically while the kids sleep the elf "moves" around the house getting into nooks and crannies waiting for the kids to find them the next morning. The kids arent allowed to touch the elf though or it disappears.

that's right and it comes with a story book you read he book to the kids but you do not let them see the elf you wait till the kids are asleep then you hide him somewhere where in the house and when they wake up in the morning they see the elf and the elf tells Santa what they want for Christmas. get it?

The elf goes back every night and reports back to santa if you have been good or bad. The adults in the house move the elf every night . The elf can be mischievous or good . If the child touches the elf , the elf will loose its magic and fly back to the north pole for a night until he retains his magic. The elf shows up on Dec. 1st and leaves Dec 24th.

Before the family wakes up each morning, the scout elf flies back from the North Pole and hides. By hiding in a new spot each morning around the house, the scout elf and the family play an on-going game of hide and seek. The Elf on the Shelf explains that scout elves get their magic by being named.

Hi, it's possible that it started here, but it's certainly not anything we do now. It sounds a bit Scandinavian to me, but I don't know. It's a cute idea wherever it originates from. Happy Christmas!
