Watering new zoysia
I read Walter Reeves' advice on grass watering here (http://www.walterreeves.com/landscaping/drought-watering-lawns/) and it recommends watering grass much less frequently than what our landscaper told us. But since our lawn is new, I assume that advice doesn't apply and we should be watering our zoysia more, until it develops good roots. Am I right?

360 Sod (Donna Dixson) on Mar 16, 2013Well.......depending on the time of year and amount of moisture available from rain, they both are correct. Given the sudden warmness of this weekend, you may need to water daily, but just enough to keep the root zone moist. If you keep the root zone continuously soppy wet your roots will drown or start rotting. What your landscaper did underneath the sod they laid is also a relevant factor. Do you know what type zoysia they used and how they prepped the area?Helpful Reply

Melissa G on Mar 16, 2013I don't know the type of zoysia, but I can call the landscaper to check. They tilled before they laid it down. Beyond that, I don't know -- should I ask them anything specifically?Helpful Reply

Douglas Hunt on Mar 17, 2013Melissa, see Walter's advice for watering new zoysia lawns below. Actually, he recommends more than your installer says. Getting the amount of water right is crucial to the establishment of your lawn, but, as 4S says, you don't want to overdo it. http://www.walterreeves.com/lawn-care/zoysia-planting-sod/Helpful Reply

Jeanette S on Mar 17, 2013With the watering bands we have had in Georgia forever, I had to water my new sod at night...not recommended, but did not have a sprinkler system so had to wait until after 10 PM to move the hose around. It was a task but we kept it growing. I LOVE my Emerald Green Zoysia...in fact, never want it mowed. I love it full grown and shaggy! Mowing my grass depresses me! And with the drought continuing in the southeast, we mow it as high as mower will go. We only mow about 4-5 times a season, depending on how much rain we get. The attached photo is when my grass needs mowing.Helpful Reply

360 Sod (Donna Dixson) on Mar 17, 2013I guess you don't really 'have' to know what type zoysia they installed. I was just curious...lol ...as I sell sod for a living :) (well and a lot of other green growing things)Helpful Reply

Jeanette S on Mar 19, 2013Four Seasons Nursery & Landscape, do they still have the "Zoysia Emerald Green" that was around years ago? That was the name of ours but we cannot seem to locate it now. I would love to buy a few pieces...don't really need a whole pallet of it.Helpful Reply

360 Sod (Donna Dixson) on Mar 19, 2013Yes, it is still around @Jeanette S , occasionally I have a few pieces in the nursery. I will try to remember to let you know when I have it. It would be wonderful to get you up to the nursery and meet you! We are not very far off of I-85 north (mall of georgia area).Helpful Reply

Jeanette S on Mar 19, 2013Hey, I know that area...yes, let me know. I was out raking my yard over the weekend to make it a little neater and I noticed that I saw a blade or two of green beginning to pop out! It sure takes hot weather to bring it out. P.S. If I take a photo of a plant in my neighbor's yard, do you think you might be able to identify it? It is a varigated spike plant about 12"...green and yellow. I love it and want some.Helpful Reply

360 Sod (Donna Dixson) on Mar 21, 2013Looke like a Yucca filamentosa "Golden Sword' also called Adam's Needle and a bunch of other names. (Don't have any in stock right now, but will see if I can get some in the next couple of weeks.) I think you can order small ones on line, or there might be a Pikes closer to you than me that would possibly have some in stock.Helpful Reply

Jeanette S on Mar 22, 2013Four Seasons Nursery & Landscape, Thank you so much for identifying this...it does look just like a Yucca but it is a different color. I don't plan to plant until after Easter and I will check with Pikes before I drive to Buford...I am just about a mile off 285 in Dunwoody! But I will keep in touch! This cold weather has stopped my working in the yard. I had planned to get some prep work work this week, but it was just too cold and windy. And my main squeeze has had his sinuses in termoil all week!Helpful Reply

360 Sod (Donna Dixson) on Mar 22, 2013There are a bunch of different varieties and I think the one you show in the picture is a 'soft leafed' one.Helpful Reply
