Jaci on Jan 17, 2016I've seen flowers set in soil then actually put in shoe bags! Use fabric shoe bags, as they let the water drain after watering. You can also purchase ladders, or if you're lucky, find old ones at thrift shops or yard sales, & put pots or long planters on each rung of the ladder, for veggies. Good luck, & happy planting!!Helpful Reply

Jane@Cottage at the Crossroads on Jan 17, 2016I would suggest growing some things in lightweight pots that you can move around as the sun does. And there are actually some things that grow well in the shade such as lettuce.Helpful Reply

Bonny McDaniel on Jan 17, 2016Wherever you get sun all day, that would be the best place for most of the veggies...if that is a vertical space then use the suggestions others have given. I use containers for my veggies and some flowers and set them on wood rounds or cinder blocks so I don't have to bend over too much (bad back!). Partial shade is ok for some plants, both veggies and flowers, and full shade only for things like hosta.Helpful Reply

Three Dogs in a Garden on Jan 18, 2016Each part of your yard will offer different opportunities. Sun is best for veggies. Most flowers will do fine in sun/part shade. Shade will require specific plants that thrive in shade. Going vertical is a great idea if you have limited space. You can grow pole beans for instance. Look through some of my Hometalk posts for some ideas. There is also small gardens and shade gardens on my blog under "More gardens" at the top.Helpful Reply
