Does anyone have trouble with white cabinets changing colors?

MN Mom on Jan 24, 2016Hi, Candy I have cherry cabinets and they are stained, not painted. They did change color after installation. Because the unfinished wood isn't exposed to sunlight, when they get stained and then installed and exposed, they gradually mellow in color and warm in tone. I'm not certain if this is the case with white cabinets. I would suggest asking the manufacturing com or your sales person why they would change, especially if they are painted as I would think the paint would be a barrier on the wood and protect it vs stain which enhances the actual wood itself.Helpful Reply

Colleen on Jan 24, 2016It depends on the paint. Yellowing can be a problem with oil based paint, but not typically with latex. Are you hiring someone to do the painting? If so, have you talked to them about it? I would start by bringing your concerns up with whomever you have hired to do the painting. If doing it yourself, which paint brand are you thinking of purchasing? Talk to the dealer about it to see what they recommend. I usually use Benjamin Moore and find my local dealer very helpful and knowledgeable.Helpful Reply

Moxie on Jan 24, 2016I think they are referring to the fact they are in the kitchen; oil, grease and air contamination will discolor cabinets; but not just white ones - you just see it more on white ones. Just my thoughtsHelpful Reply

B. Enne on Jan 24, 2016Hi @Candy Thompson grease, smoking and gas heating yellow melamine and vinyl cabinets. We have thermofoil cabinets, with melamine frames, and the frames all yellowed more than the vinyl doors, eventhough the doors are more exposed to the light and food splashes. We have low-e window glass, and do not cook with much grease or smoke. We were told years ago that it was our gas heating. Same thing happened to all our friends who had melamine cabinets, since most people heat with gas in our area.Helpful Reply

Carole S. on Jan 25, 2016I have always had white painted cabinets in my kitchen (30 years). There is something about a white kitchen that looks fresh and inviting. Never had a problem with yellowing, using latex paint. The last time they were painted, gloss paint was used and it looks beautiful. You do have to wipe them down every few weeks, but it is worth it.Helpful Reply

LD on Jan 25, 2016Samples are not a true representation of the finish, for exposure to light changes the finished look. I would recommend that you have the cabinet fronts painted after the countertop is installed. Most paint stores have the capability to replicate your countertop color.Helpful Reply

Candy Thompson on Jan 25, 2016I am going to talk to the company that will do the cabinet finishing and ask about the color staying true. I know their finishes are super durable so I am not worried about that aspect.Helpful Reply
