Filling in a pass-through window between two rooms

Question

Does anyone have any ideas of how to fill in a pass-through window? My son has a window in front of his kitchen sink that goes through to a small adjacent room off the bathroom that he has his washer, dryer and freezer in. It is a weird layout. He would like to use pallet wood as his budget isn't very big. He is replacing the cabinets in the kitchen and would like to do the backsplash and cover the window with the pallet wood. Are there any DIY sites that have something like this?

Forgot to mention that he would like a shadowbox look to the window that he covers up. Any ideas?

To fill it in, just frame it out with 2x4 studs cut to fit inside, then drywall over both sides...
but for a shadow box, I would put a piece of 1/2 inch plywood on the back side of the box, leaving enough room for a piece of 1/2 inch drywall.

On the drywall side, tape & mud it, then after it is sanded, paint it with a primer, then your color of choice.

On the inside of the shadowbox, use a mastic to glue in a mirror background, trim it out with some 1/4 round, & you are good to go.

We had a 1927 Spanish House (weird, weird layout). Had to do some major adjusting for the entire house. Had a window from kitchen into back (bedroom, etc? extra room). We measured opening ( could have gotten used window from Restore but changed our mind at last minute). Made our own shutter window. Instead of shutter it was glass inside frame. So it could be open for ventilation and view sometimes. Put a wood large slat blind on room side in case we changed usages of the extra room. Which we did ... changed into guest bedroom. Worked nice for privacy, sound and decorating! Hope this helps. Cost next to nothing!.

Thanks mgpeace!! Maybe I can talk him into making a shutter from his pallets that he wants to use as a backsplash. Or would that be too much wood? I'm hopeless at DIY, but I love looking at everyones projects.

Love the idea of shutters made from the pallet wood, but would also be cool if he just mounted the pallet wood over the entire area and maybe did a collage of framed photos, or something similar.....

think about using that space for shelving. You could cover over one side and install shelves in the space for the other room.

I agree with the shutter idea or he could use spray frost to make the glass opaque.

does he need the light from the window? If so, put in 2-3 glass shelves and plants (fake if he will not take care of them), find a old stained glass window that is a close fit and hang from chains, or gave a glass cutter cut you a piece of glass you like, there are so many varieties available. Thanks everyone! Those are some great ideas!! He liked the shutters idea and also the shelving. I don't know what he will decide but this at least gives him some options. He might just frame it out with the pallet wood and add shelves. Thanks again!!!
