Tomato question

Marcy on Apr 29, 2013When this happened to our tomato plants, I would take the branches and sort of weave them by hand through the branches within the support. Some of the branches never ended up staying within the support but still grew beautiful tomatoes with the branches on the ground. I'm not sure if this is the best thing to do (weaving it through) but it worked for us and the tomatoes grew beautifully.Helpful Reply

Douglas Hunt on Apr 30, 2013If the branches are long you'll need to find a way to support them or they may snap from the weight of the tomatoes growing on them.Helpful Reply

360 Sod (Donna Dixson) on Apr 30, 2013If you can't find a way to support them, you can carefully take them off without damaging the trunk of the tomato plant. The tomatoes left will usually have the ability to grow larger (with the exception of the mini toms) because there is less competition for nutrients.Helpful Reply

Yaron on Apr 30, 2013Thanks! @360 Sod (Donna Dixson) , is there any special way to take them off or just cut them with gardening scissors as close to the trunk as possible? I also wanted to know if I am tying them correctly. I attached a photo.Helpful Reply

360 Sod (Donna Dixson) on Apr 30, 2013@Yaron Yes, that would be fine. If you are talking about the stalk that is inbetween the trunk and the leaf branch, some people take those off anyway when the plant is younger.Helpful Reply
