KMS Woodworks on Feb 17, 2012A standard set of bi-folds is comprised of 4 individual doors...triming each door by 1/8 of an inch will give you the needed 1/2" I normally do this to the sides where the hinges are. I have done this with both paint grade and stain grade. The hard sharp edge can be eased with a round over bit or "broke" with a RO sander.Helpful Reply

KMS Woodworks on Feb 17, 2012You have two options here...either make the doors smaller to fit the opening....or make the opening bigger to fit the doors. The door route is far less invasive. accordion doors or curtains are another option, as well as custom built doors.Helpful Reply

Rose S on Feb 17, 2012I had a Lowe's fellow here this AM to measure the opening. My handyman was not very encouraging, though at times past he always tried to 'humor' me. I had suggested to him that he might be able to take something off the side of the opening, but he told me that that was needed to secure the bi-folds to. So now I have to see what 'solution' Lowe's might have.Helpful Reply

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Feb 17, 2012You can measure the true opening size and custom order bi-fold doors to fit your opening. Or as KMS said, cut an oversize set of doors to fit, or purchase smaller ones and fill around the edges of the frame so they work correctly. We had the same issue. I ended up ordering mirror bi-fold custom doors for the room. It was only about $35 more then the over the counter price. And the install was quite easy.Helpful Reply

HandyANDY - Handyman & All Repairs, LLC on Feb 19, 2012I get the same thing all the time KMS - most handmen aren't very skilled with carpentry. It's a pain but we can trim down the bi-folds to fit the space. Happy to see it can give you pricing for what you are wanting RoseHelpful Reply
