Mary Jennings Meffe on Mar 01, 2016I had a plate glass mirror cut to cover the top half of the wall behind the couch. We mounted it with mirror clips and it gave the illusion of doubling the size of the room.Helpful Reply

Sbsb1005 on Mar 01, 2016Paint the ceiling color 6 to 12" down onto the walls. Ceilings dont have to be white, you can choose a softer cream color. This draws the eye up and appears to make the ceiling height taller. Use light colors to give the illusion of more space. Larger pieces of furniture also help without too many "cha-kees" to clutter. Hang your curtain rods all the way to the ceiling and make sure curtains go to the floor. Hard to tell without a photo but keep furniture away from the opening - so when you enter the room its an open pathway.Helpful Reply

Susan Ziegler on Mar 01, 2016I didn't like large wall size mirrors so I clustered many small mirrors opposite windows so light would be brighter. Some rooms are just small no matter what you do but increasing the light coming into a room makes a lot of different. I watch the shows where people are looking at houses to buy and when they enter a room with great light, they oh how cozy not oh how small.Helpful Reply

KatAych on Mar 01, 2016Not sure what your sectional looks like, but if you can, orient it so that you walk into the "open" part. it won't cut the room off and will definitely give you a more spacious feel.Helpful Reply

Deb on Mar 04, 2016How much do you really love that furniture? "Overstuffed" and "dark" really work against you. Feeling handy? Use your library to learn all you can about slip-covering something -- nice for summer anyway!! Buy your fabric on sale, and go light. On Trading Spaces years ago, they showed how to make a slipcover inside-out over the chair/sofa. Really smart!! Susan's emphasis on light is spot on -- mirrors, natural light, electric light, and less contrast with light walls will all help. And next time, buy furniture where the arms and back take up less space. I collect '50s -- just no wasted space. Good luck!!Helpful Reply
