My pots and potting spoil, drying out

Ok here we go again, I learned from you all not to bother putting pebbles, rocks etc in the bottom of my pots for drainage. But now I noticed another situation. I hand watered my pots because the water hasnt been turned on here yet, the top inch of soil got wet, then the rest of the water drained right through. Leaving the rest/layers of the potting soil (from last year) dry.
Should I take the soil out of the pots (and therefore also the rocks) and put fresh potting soil in?

Douglas Hunt on Apr 16, 2012If your potting soil has turned so hard that water runs off, you need to take it out, break it up and moisten it thoroughly before planting again. If you've used the soil for several seasons, it may be time to add it to the compost pile and start with fresh.Helpful Reply
