Local plant or bush

We have a bush that grows here in the Mohawk Valley in NY. I was told that it is a wild currant and that they were poisonous. Someone else told me they were turkey berries and they are edible. They grow on a bush similar to a blueberry bush and they look like blueberries except they are a red berry and they grow on a single stem per berry. I don't have any pics yet but will try to get some and post them. If you know the plant, please give me some info on it.

Without pictures, it's impossible to know, but here is a link on identifying currants. http://www.ehow.com/how_6622447_identify-wild-currant-shrubs.html Real currants are not poisonous or my family would have been long gone before I ever came along. :-) However, currants have more than one berry per stem, so that doesn't sound like your plant.

I was describing a bush that I had seen a long time ago. So my memory failed me. I thank you for the link. It is very informative. I will post some pics in the early fall when they are ripe so you can see them. I had tasted one berry and it had a nice sweetness to it. And no ill effects.

Need to wait until the bush blossoms and get pictures.
