Aging A Metal Sign
-
Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Jun 24, 2013If you use vinegar and wipe it on the metal it will etch the galvanized coating and allow it to be painted. The etching alone will whiten the surface of the metal as the acid in the vinegar reacts to the coating. Using muriatic acid also works, just a bit riskier being more acidic then simple vinegar. Once etched and depending upon just how aged you want to do, will have more weight on what to do and what not to do.Helpful Reply

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Jun 24, 2013The process depends upon what you want the final look to be. If you age the sign first then finish it will look like you painted over an old sign in attempt to hide its condition, If you want the sign to look distressed I would finish then age it.Helpful Reply
