Growing Basil

360 Sod (Donna Dixson) on Jul 13, 2013BT is short for Bacillus Thuringiensis. You can find it at any Garden Center, or HomeDepot type store, or on line. I carry the Bonide brand under the name Thuricide. If you have African Basil you can leave the blooms on, otherwise you need to pinch them off in order to keep the basil from getting bitter.Helpful Reply

Gwendolyn Schilling on Jul 14, 2013Thanks Donna for your help. I'm not sure of what type of Basil I have, it has little white flowers growing from the top. What is to be done with the pinched parts?Helpful Reply

Don Goldwyn on Jul 25, 2013You should always cut off the flowering stalks as soon as you recognize they are growing. Once your basil plants set seeds, the plants will die. You can collect the seeds, though and sow them in your garden and you\'ll get lots of healthy new basil plants. Be sure to pinch them back regularly and be sure to pinch out the flowering stalks whenever they appear. Hope that helps!Helpful Reply
