James A on Mar 28, 2011I had great luck with Red-Tipped Photinia, Fraser Photinia. They grew faster than I could clip them and were very thick. I was surrounded in a year with almost complete privacy. This was just a few miles from you in Rex, GA, so I know you have similar soil. They do get rust easily so spray with fungicide often.Helpful Reply

Larry on Mar 28, 2011All the prior listings have disease and overuse problems. Go to the nursery and ask. Look outside the box and I mean Big Box too! Look at Nellie R Stevens Holly, Eastern Red Cedar, Pyracanthia's too.Helpful Reply

Flowerscapes Garden Design & Landscaping on Mar 28, 2011Larry, you are so right! I also like Savannah Holly because it has a less dense habit, but is still a terrific screen. I love to satisfy more than just one need when thinking screens. Think fragrance, texture, different shades of green, trees and shrubs with berries that birds love. I often use Fragrant Tea Olive, ( Osmanthus), and Banana Shrub. You can also layer, with a tall evergreen such as Nellie R Stevens Holly and put a fragrant Gardenia in front of it. I also love Canadian Hemlock as the foil, or backdrop, with George Tabor Azaleas in front of them. Most important, think about the width of the plant and how much room you have or want to use. The UGA plant fact sheets give very accurate plant sizes and cultivation information. Remember, a plant tag from a shrub grown in a Florida or Minnesota nursery will often state heights and widths that are not true for GeorgiaHelpful Reply
