How do you cure an iron skillet?

Bart Thompson on Aug 18, 2013Good way is to spray it with Pam cooking spray then put it in a hot gas bbq grill. When it stops smoking turn the grill off and let cool. Use it all the time for all my dutch oven and cast iron cooking stuff.Helpful Reply

Catherine Smith on Aug 19, 2013You can also coat the skillet with cooking oil and bake in the oven at 350 for an hours. Allow it to cool and wipe in down with paper towels. I store mine, with a paper towel in between the layers. I do use Pam when cooking, but don't know as I would like the "flavor" as a seasoning in my cookware. Never use abrasives on an iron skillet, other than a bit of coarse salt and scrub gently. I have 3 iron skillets of various sizes and a dutch oven. Mine belonged to my grandmother, Marilyn so they're well over 100 year old. With care they will last almost forever and the food tastes sooooooo good.Helpful Reply

Vickie Meador on Mar 09, 2014Marilyn Another tip: After cooking in your skillet, I hand wash, then I put my iron skillet on the stove burner, turn heat on high to dry. This will keep your skillet nice and cured, no chance of rusting! I have my great aunt's iron skillet that is approx. 90 years young :)Helpful Reply
