How do you cure an iron skillet?

I have a very old iron shillet (55 yrs.) There is some way to heat oil in it in oven to cure it, meaning when you use on stove food will not stick. It was cured when I got it but I burned something and couldn't use as well after. Long ago people cured them but how.

Good way is to spray it with Pam cooking spray then put it in a hot gas bbq grill. When it stops smoking turn the grill off and let cool. Use it all the time for all my dutch oven and cast iron cooking stuff.

You can also coat the skillet with cooking oil and bake in the oven at 350 for an hours. Allow it to cool and wipe in down with paper towels. I store mine, with a paper towel in between the layers. I do use Pam when cooking, but don't know as I would like the "flavor" as a seasoning in my cookware. Never use abrasives on an iron skillet, other than a bit of coarse salt and scrub gently. I have 3 iron skillets of various sizes and a dutch oven. Mine belonged to my grandmother, Marilyn so they're well over 100 year old. With care they will last almost forever and the food tastes sooooooo good.

i rub the oil in the pan put it in the oven on about 159-200 F and leave it for about an hour ,i do mine every now and tan
  • It can be cured by coating the old pan with grease andoven-cooking it. This process will fills the pores of the cast iron, andrenders the pan with natural look.

Marilyn Another tip: After cooking in your skillet, I hand wash, then I put my iron skillet on the stove burner, turn heat on high to dry. This will keep your skillet nice and cured, no chance of rusting! I have my great aunt's iron skillet that is approx. 90 years young :)
