Douglas Hunt on Nov 10, 2013It's very hard to diagnose a disease without knowing anything about the cultural conditions of the plant. How much sun is it getting? How often do you water it? What are those what appear to be holes around the plant?Dahlias would usually be planted as tubers in the spring. What was the source of the plant?Helpful Reply

Liliana Wells on Nov 11, 2013Different dahlias do better in different parts of the country. Check out http://sfdahlias.org. They may be able to help with dahlias that are appropriate in California.. But take also in consideration all that Douglas suggested. Good luck.Helpful Reply

Judy Gerardi on Nov 11, 2013I see pine needles as your mulch. Should you use a different mulch? I use bark, and have good luck with mine. I also leave them in the ground all year because of the milder climate. You will get lots of different suggestions that work. Good luck. They are one of my favorites.Helpful Reply

Linda Anstice on Nov 11, 2013I have mine planted across the front of my house so they are in full sun all day. I also use Miracle Grow soil around them and they are doing fantastic. I also do not take mine up for the winter because they are protected from the cold by the house. They make the most beautiful flowers. My plants grew huge this year.Helpful Reply

Claudia on Nov 11, 2013@Emily, it wouldn't hurt to dig up the plant and pot it. If you can control the site and conditions, perhaps you can rehabilitate it. Your plant may have had too much water and the mulch might be preventing it from drying out. Make sure the pot has good drainage. Good luck.Helpful Reply
