First you must make sure this is not a main bearing wall.
FIRST!! Make sure it is not a structural wall. Spend the money to have a contractor or engineer take a look.
RIGHT! You will need to find out if it is load bearing or not. If it is, LEAVE IT ALONE! A licensed contractor can remove it, if you must. You will also need to see if there is any electrical or plumbing in the wall. ***** http://www.diynetwork.com/how-to/rooms-and-spaces/bathroom/how-to-remove-interior-walls ***** http://www.wikihow.com/Remove-Interior-Walls
It is structural
Since it is structural, You will need a structural engineer to calculate a size for a beam to support the above floor and a contractor to remove the wall and install the beam. No second story :)
Have a professional come take a look and decide if and how it can come down. Perhaps be happy with a door or a wide opening instead of removing the entire wall? These would still require additional structural beams, but not quite as much as removing an entire wall. Worth getting a professional opinion.
No second story, but an attic and the roof. Since it is structural, it is holding something up.
I'd say definitely get a professional to take a look before going ahead, maybe you can work with them
