I had an all brass-clad trunk like this. I cleaned up the latches and the other hardware but It was pretty beaten up so I used ALOT of Mod Podge and fabric bits all over it to look almost like a quilt. I also added some rick-rack trim around the top. I don't have a picture to share because I ended up giving it away to a family member for her first apartment and it is being used as a coffee table. (A cedar lined storage coffee table!) Good luck with whatever you decide to do.
What to do with it? Sell it to me for $25 and you almost double your money. I love its original patina and color. I would do little but to clean it up and use it for what it is intended a nice table, storage box in a room.
You can upholster the top and use it as a storage ottomon with a similar technique as this DIY- http://www.hometalk.com/diy/living-room/furniture/upholstering-tufting-a-coffee-table-turned-ottoman-667043?expand_all_questions=1
good luck and have fun!
Upholstering/tufting a coffee table turned ottoman
Refinish it and turn it into an entryway bench with storage
I had one exactly like it I redid for a wedding gift to my son. Theres a place called Shenendoah Trunk Restoration where you can trplace any pieces you may wat, from corners to straps to the inside paper. Prices are reasonable too.
I purchased this material: faux leather and animal print jute
A co worker used textured wallpaper to line the inside of one and painted the outside. She said there is retro wallpaper she wished she had used instead.
We repurposed a trunk about 30 years ago. we taped all the brass, as the patina was so nice. Then we spray pained it with a textured paint. We then had a piece of thick glass made to fit over the trunk. Very pretty and used it as our coffee table.
