You can use an analine dye and
not your run of the mill pigmented (i.e. minwax) stain. The more
concentrated the dye solution, the more intense the color. Have fun!
Sometimes, you have to mix stains to get just the right color. You say you want darker which is confusing. How dark? Please go to you local hardware store and check out the stains. Talk to someone who has experience with staining over maple. If you already have several cans of stain, you can experiment with mixing and apply on bed where it does not show.
I've used gel stains to darken natural wood furniture to a deep mahogany. If there is a finish on it, you will have to rough it up with sand paper first. And you might have to do multiple coats.
