It sounds like there is not much room for the root system I would consider planting the shrubs in containers. Norway spruce .Hinokifalse cypress, bald cypress,Golden globe arborvitae
www.plantselect.com is a good resource to look at recommendations. I would also go to the Botanic Gardens and see what they use in shaded areas. And I would visit a neighborhood greenhouse. Personally, I would go to Tagawa's. They seem to be one of the more knowledgeable places, and Echter's, too.
I'm not sure how tall you want a tree to grow. How close or far away from the house do you want your item planted. There are nice bushes that can give your yard a nice look. There are also Japanese maples that stay small, but have great interesting details. I think I have also seen weeping cherry trees that are pretty, but small.
Just some food for thought, but I would really go to a local garden center and talk with someone who knows Denver growing needs and can ask you questions about your home and yard. With that information they can make recommendations for your specific needs!
happy planting!
Not sure that planting a permanent tree under a window is a good idea. 1. Too close to house; it can cause dry rot and bugs/carpenter ants if the brush is too close to the house. I agree with Kathy who said to talk to a local garden center (Not a chain garden center, but an invidivudally owned, run one because they will know their stuff). I also think you should drive around and look at houses that have the landscaping ideas you want; take photos.
