I would think you could do it pretty easily, but are the ends decorative? If not, that's what I'd do. If you can't fasten the headboard to the bedframe, you could screw it into the wall. Hope that helps! Perhaps send a picture so we can see what you're dealing with.
We have cut down headboards for our home. If there isn't a decorative end it's doable. If it is a post you can always get a new post to match or remove at each end and use two new ones. The key is to sand a lot.
