What is the best soil and liners etc. to use for container plantings?

I want to block the holes so the soil does not get out, but want to allow for drainage and to maximize water retention.

Use Miracle grow potting soil for flowers.
I use Oak leaves because I have so many and it does not cost anything. Over time, it turns into compost and I use less soil. It is acidic so some plants do not do well but, others love and require that kind of soil. For example, Azaleas. The leaves keep the soil from draining out.
I also use coffee filters, they work.
