Why Raised Garden Beds
Good drainage, easier on the back for cultivating. Easier to keep weed free.
Easier to maintain for older people. If you build them 18+ inches high you can add a board around the top for a seat. I've even seen people build a garden box on legs so someone in a wheelchair could roll up and garden in them. I have a large garden and use raised beds to contain my "good" soil. Also easier to weedwhack between the beds when necessary. You can start small and add more when you want without plowing up the whole yard.
They're just easier to maintain. Also, depending on how you construct them, they can really look special!
