Did you top it with peat moss?
I mix a bag of grass seed with a large bag of garden soil, then spread it out where needed.
Around here we tend to use hay. It keeps it from washing away in the rain and helps to keep the birds from eating it. It decomposes into compost and is also fairly inexpensive.
